THE GUINNESS BOOK'S own EVER GREEN HERO (When Statistics Stunned Stars)
THE GUINESS BOOK’S own EVER GREEN HERO –
(When Statistics Stunned Stars)
Prem Nazir, the Malayalam Super Star, who appeared in most number of films (about 700) in a lead role (hero) and acted opposite 85 heroines and also acted in most number of films (130) with a single heroine namely Sheela with great enduring onscreen chemistry holds the world record and made it to the Guinness Book of World Records. He has acted in a record 39 films which were released in a single year (1979) another world record and an amazing achievement.
Guinness World Records :
Guinness World Records, known from its inception in 1955 until 1998 as The Guinness Book of Records and in previous U.S. editions as The Guinness Book of World Records, is a reference book published annually, listing world records and national records, both of human achievements and the extremes of the natural world. The book itself holds a world record, as the best-selling copyrighted book of all time. There are also Guinness Museum and Guinness TV serials.
The popularity of the
franchise has resulted in Guinness World Records becoming the primary
international authority on the cataloguing and verification of a huge number of
world records; the organization employs official record adjudicators authorized
to verify the authenticity of the setting and breaking of records.
Guinness World Records was established in 1955. It records the longest, shortest, tallest, smallest and more. It explores the facts, feats and achievements. It accounts for the speed, frequent and other marvelous, astonishing and interesting discoveries in the world being recorded. It opens the door to amazing facts and figures of the World.
I would like to give
hereunder few examples of Guinness World Record events.
World’s most prolific mother:
The greatest officially recorded number of
children born to one mother is 69, to the wife of Feodor Vassilyev (b. 1707–c.1782),
a peasant from Shuya, Russia. In 27 confinements she gave birth to 16 pairs of
twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. Numerous
contemporaneous sources exist, which suggest that this seemingly improbably and
statistically unlikely story is true. The case was reported to Moscow by the
Monastery of Nikolsk on 27 Feb 1782, which had recorded every birth. It is
noted that, by this time, only two of the children who were born in the period c.
1725–65 failed to survive their infancy.
The Gentleman's Magazine (1783, 53, 753)
recounts: "In an original letter now before me, dated St Petersburg, Aug
13, 1782, O. S. Feodor Wassilief, aged 75, a peasant, said to be now alive and
in perfect health, in the Government of Moscow, has had–
By his first wife:
4 x 4 = 16
7 x 3 = 21
16 x 2 = 32
----------
27 births 69 children
7 x 3 = 21
16 x 2 = 32
----------
27 births 69 children
By his second wife:
6 x 2 = 12
2 x 3 = 6
---------
8 births 18 children
6 x 2 = 12
2 x 3 = 6
---------
8 births 18 children
"In all, 35 births, 87 children, of which 84
are living and only three buried. . . The above relation, however astonishing,
may be depended upon, as it came directly from an English merchant at St
Petersburg to his relatives in England, who added that the peasant was to be
introduced to the Empress."
PATTAYA, Thailand --
Hospital security guard Ekkachai Tiranarat, 44, and 33-year-old housewife
Laksana locked lips for 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds, during the "kissing
marathon" being held at Ripley's Museum in Pattaya, smashing existing Guinness
World Record by more than eight hours.
Most Frequent Sex :
The male scaly cricket
Ornebius aperta from Australia can copulate more than 50 times in three to four
hours, all with the same female. Studies reveal that each time a male mates, a
bag of sperm is placed on the female which she immediately eats. The sperm is
an extremely nutritious food for the female cricket which is why she devours it
so eagerly. By comparison, female chimpanzees have been recorded copulating
with eight different males in 15 minutes. A lioness in heat has sex once every
half an hour for four or five days/nights.
Prem
Nazir explored:

Prem Nazir, the Mother India’s “Dhartiputtar” (Son of the soil) breathed success while many world records tumbled at his feet. He made it to the Guinness Book of World Records in terms of statistics that stunned other movie stars and world fraternity all alike and remained enviable with those record breaking stints. He lived and worked passionately ignorant about the fact that he was cruising along to the Guinness Book of World Records. He was a matter of pride for all Indian nationals and global movie lovers with his record breaking fetes.
“Prem Nazir” - A
pseudonym found suitable by his Casting Director for this legend when he
appeared on screen for the first time. He was a devastatingly handsome star
with a feminine charm, who was the heartthrob of millions of movie patron
especially young women fans in his heyday.
This star from “Gods Own Country” acted mainly in Malayalam films, his
mother tongue, and also made few appearances in other South Indian language
films as well. He was the “Gods own
Country’s – Ever Green Hero”.
He was popularly known
as “Nithya haritha nayakan” or “Ever Green Hero” and made inroads into the
hearts of millions of mallu or malayalee fans.
The title “Ever Green Hero” does justice to the fact that he was doing
the leading role as hero even in his elder years as well. He did not possess any histrionic acting
talent which usually merits many National Awards or Oscars but won the movie
goers hearts through his disarming smile, handsome personality, unique style
and mannerisms. He was a cherubic chocolate hero with elegance and poise. However, he demonstrated spark of talent
sporadically and was merited with few acting laurels and also national honors
like “Padma Bhushan” and “Padma Shri”.
He was a hardworking
actor who lived his life in front of the scorching spotlights, make-up room and
shooting - day and night - in multiple shifts with megaphone wielding directors. He had a photogenic face which was also most Camera
friendly.
He was an actor every mimicry artist from famous “Cochin Kala Bhavan” delighted to mime. His style of dialogue delivery coupled with action elated the audience and when today’s mimicry artists exhibit their talent, the thoroughly entertained mallu audience gets into frenzy. Prem Nazir was the most popular movie star for many decades and heroines from many generations were paired opposite him. Some of them played the role of his daughter initially and latter did the role of his heroine. He was tailor made for run of the mill romantic genre of films. He wooed the heroines of his time with running around the trees and song sequences.

He was humble as
compared to the super stars of today who sports personal vanity vans (caravans),
and was caught resting on stone blocks under the tree during the breaks from
shooting in the late 1950s.
Prem Nazir was lucky to have been associated with the duo the lyricist and poet Vayalar Rama Varma and “Gana Gandharvan” Padmashri Dr. K.J. Yesudas, the Playback singer. While Vayalar penned the film lyrics, Yesudas did the rendition of songs and entertained the audience. Even today, many consider that the duo Prem Nazir-Yesudas combination has the best song sequences on screen. It is truly a blessing to work with both Vayalar and Yesudas. The duo had gifted many immortal songs that had enriched Malayalam cinema. The Vayalar-Nazir-Yesudas combination can be described as the “Amar, Akbar, Anthony” of Malayalam cinema for secular interests.

Vayalar RamaVarma Dr. K.J. Yesudas
Vayalar
Rama Varma :
Vayalar Rama Varma was a euphoric lyricist and poet who had penned thousands of invaluable treasure of Malayalam film and drama songs. He had also written poetry in Malayalam language. He had the best command in his mother tongue, Malayalam and possessed nearly dozen adjectives for a single word. After Jesus Christ, who is most famous for his synonyms, it is Vayalar Rama Varma who was truly gifted with it.
When Vayalar died his
friend and novelist Malayatoor Ramakrishnan wrote that you are the song of my
country, you are the fire - blaze, thrill and ecstasy.
When you finally bade goodbye to this world, the gods who does not know
how to cry and we who learned only to cry, shed tears. You are the pride of Malayalam language and
always will be. You are immortal.
I would like to present
a lyric bit of Vayalar from the film “Punarjanmam” (Rebirth) –
“Kaamasasthramezhuthiya muniyude
Kanakathoolike – Nee
Manavahridayamam thooneerathile
Translated for the benefit of non-mallu readers –
“
The seer (Vatsyayan) who has written the “Kaam Sasthra” (Science of Lust) with his golden pen, which have become the quiver of human heart’s magical arrow and the cupid’s arrow.”
Padmashree Dr K.J. Yesudas or Dassettan
had sung thousands of film songs in multiple Indian languages and entertained
music lovers across India. His
association with Prem Nazir and Vayalar was the most fruitful and entertaining.
Prem Nazir’s
contemporary and arch rival “Sathyan” was a thespian and most talented histrionic
movie actor who effortlessly portrayed any difficult roles to perfection and
took natural acting to the highest echelon.
Sathyan Madhu
Madhu was another
contemporary veteran actor of Prem Nazir.
In the 1960s and 1970s in the era of black and white cinema Prem Nazir,
Madhu and Sathyan ruled the Malayalam screen. Prem Nazir acted in the first 70 mm and
Cinemascope Malayalam cinema. His film
tally 720 films, majority of them in
lead roles, which is difficult to surpass for any other movie star in the
world.
Prem Nazir with MGR.
The contemporary South
Indian Stars of Prem Nazir was MGR, NTR
and Dr.Raj Kumar from Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industry respectively.
It is interesting to note that Prem Nazir was a very good singer and had training in Carnatic music.
Born in Chirayinkeezhu, in the princely state of
Travancore as Chirinkyl Abdul Khader, accepted the screen name of “Prem Nazir”
when he entered the film industry. He
was the first “Super star” of Malayalam film industry. The Malayalam film industry has now completed
the coveted milestone of 100 years.
He graduated from St. Berchman's College in
Changanassery, Kerala. He started acting for the Excel Productions (Udaya
Studio) and most of his films were for the Udaya and Merryland Studios. He
portrayed the ideal male in most of his films.
He was born to Akkode Shahul Hameed and Asuma
Beevi. His mother died when he was very young.
By the time he completed his education he has become an experienced
drama artist. Prem Nazir had his acting
debut as Shylock in the play “The Merchant of Venice” in 1951.
His debut film was “Marumakal” (1952) directed by
S.K. Chari and produced by Paul Kallungal.
Prem Nazir started his career when drama was the most popular visual
medium and film making was in its infancy.
With the arrival of
Prem Nazir there was a new screen personality, a new debonair actor who could
be the heartthrob of the youth. Prem
Nazir acquired the halo of a romantic hero and a loyal following. His films were very popular with women
audiences and soon made him a darling of the masses. He soon became the real
star of Malayalam cinema. Another factor
that helped Prem Nazir’s instant rise was his Devotional and Mythological
characters as was the trend in other Indian language cinema. He was well known for his roles of Hindu
deities like Rama, Krishna and Ayyappa.
Costumed musicals,
filmed start to finish within the confines of a studio contributed their
own. All such films for a long period
kept him before his fans, nourished his romantic image and provided him
unlimited scope for rehearsing and refining his talent in essaying diverse
roles.
In the late 1950s Prem Nazir drew attention by playing movies with themes based on social and religious injustices in the society. From 1956 to 1976 Prem Nazir rode high at the crest of a tidal wave of popularity and also gave his best to Malayalam cinema. Prem Nazir catapulted to the row of finest actors of India with the film “Iruttinte Atmavu” (Soul of Darkness) (1967). Playing a demented youth Velayudhan, Prem Nazir discovered his prowess as a dramatic actor of intensity. Many critics have evaluated this role as his masterpiece and one of the finest onscreen performances ever. Written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair, the film provided Malayalam cinema with a new direction, that of the low budget film. One could see a lot of the pre-occupations of the scenarist who carried the touches of human relationships through all of his subsequent films whether as a screenplay writer or director. In spite of its large number of Studio shots and overall theatricality, the film was so culturally rich that many of the episodes would become archetypes for future Malayalam filmmakers dealing with family drama. It depicted the story of an imbecile (finely portrayed by Prem Nazir) in a joint family with a remarkable sensitivity and seriousness of purpose.

“Anubhavangal
Palichagal”, “Munrappenu”, “Asuravithu” and “Padayottam” are few other films in
which he did noteworthy performances.
During his peak time, Prem
Nazir gave life to many characters and enjoyed wide popularity in all the
segments of society.
One of his major
contribution was films based on Vadakkan
Pattukal in which he played swashbuckling historical characters. He possessed the physical beauty and supple
body. However, it is necessary to
mention that he did not have six-pack abs and masculinity required for these
roles and evoked criticism. Aromalunni,
Kannappanunni, Thacholi Ambu and Padayottam are some of his major films in this
genre. He acted opposite beautiful heroines
like Sheela, Sri Vidya and Vijayashree in these films. These films had beautiful costume drama and fantasy
dream sequences which were hits with mainstream movie lovers.
Although, Sheela is
known as the lucky mascot for Prem Nazir, other actresses like Jayabharathi and
Sharada was paired successfully with him and their films too were box office
successes.
Prem Nazir with Sheela Prem Nazir with Jayabharathi
In his movies Prem Nazir was well known for essaying the eternal romantic hero and the good guy who would bash up the villains without remorse.
Even though Prem Nazir
could not regenerate after mid-1970s, he maintained his super stardom till the
beginning of 1980s.
A new superstar emerged
in Malayalam cinema namely Jayan and gained popularity at that time. Jayan was
a craze among the Mallu youth. He was a muscular built and tough hero. However, his success did not last as he was
killed in an accident while performing a mid-air stunt 40’ high dangling from a
Helicopter fell down and breathed his last.
Unfortunately for him he insisted to the stunt director that he will do
the stunt scene himself without using a dupe.
In the beginning of
1980s Prem Nazir started doing supporting roles. He mostly played supporting roles to then
reigning super stars like Jayan, Soman and Sukumaran.
In 1981 he did a major
supporting role in Mohan’s “Vida Parayum Mumbe” that earned him Kerala State Film
Award (Special Jury Award).
This shift from a super romantic hero to character roles, gave him an opportunity to play some of the stellar roles during the mid-1980s. His last completed film was Dwani (1989) in which he co-starred with Jayaram. His last release was Priyadarshan’s “Kadathanadan Ambadi” (1990) in which he co-starred with Mohanlal. Prem Nazir had expressed his desire to direct the then reigning super stars Mohanlal and Mammootty in the lead in one of his interview to the press.
Mohanlal Mammootty
Prem Nazir was a
teetotaler. He was a fine actor and a
great human being. He was a social reformer and contributed generously to
public needs especially in his home town Chirayinkeezhu.
Prem Nazir wrote a book
on the film characters he essayed “Enne Thediyethiya Kathapatrangal.
Prem Nazir’s younger
brother Prem Nawaz was an actor and film producer. His son Shanawaz too was an actor who could
not step into his father’s big boot as a successful film personality. Prem Nazir also has three daughters from his
marriage to Habeeba Beevi.
The “Prem Nazir Award” was initiated in his memory,
in 1992, for excellence in contributions to the Malayalam Film Industry.
He was awarded “Padma Bhushan” and “Padma Shri” by the Indian President in recognition of distinguished services of a high order to the nation in his field (acting).
He died in Chennai on
January 16, 1989 due to peptic ulcer coupled with viral fever and measles.
Prem Nazir’s achievements
to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records fascinated me to devote a
space for him in JOHNNY’S BLOG.
